Herbert H. Einstein Dipl.
Ing., 1960 Eidgenoessische Hochschule (ETH)
Zurich, Switzerland Sc.D., 1966, ETH
Prof. Einstein is the leader of the Rock
Mechanics/Engineering Geology Group, described in
Section 6.3. He has published over 100 papers in
these areas and in tunneling, and he consults
worldwide in tunneling, rock engineering and
landslide risk analysis. His specialty in the
rock mechanics area is the characterization of
rock fracture regarding geometry, hydraulics and
mechanics. His research interests include both
fundamental rock behavior and in engineering
applications. This has led to a number of
approaches in the design and risk analysis area.
He is co-editor of Rock Mechanics and Rock
Engineering and is on the editorial boards of
Engineering Geology , Numerical Methods in
Geosciences , and Underground Space.
He is currently serving on the U.S. National
Committee on Rock Mechanics of the National
Academy of Sciences as well as on the Commission
for Rock Joints of the International Society for
Rock Mechanics.
